Rhogar chuckles, and Bandle goes to speak, when suddenly your conversation is interrupted by a shudder in the ground beneath you, growing stronger ever moment. "Quake!" Rhogar yell, lunging over to pull Bandle to the ground and cover her as all around you the animals of the caravan begin to shriek and rear and stamp their feet. Cries ring out from across the caravan as those who went to bed early are startled awake, while those around the fire with you likewise throw themselves to the ground to protect themselves.
As far back as any of you can recall, there's never been an earthquake around your home. I don't think you would be aware of what one is, beyond the stories you've heard.

...Sssoo... I don't think Callisssta knows what an earthquake -is-...
The bat trails off, something sweet and literal about her nearsightedness when it comes to being snuck up on, to being suddenly very confused about the ground beneath her and the noise. This whole... Terrestrial thing is new. So..
Very flat-footedly, she looks to the l her friends and asks, "What's happening? Is it monsters?"

While Orion doesn't know what an earthquake is, he does see Rhogar pull Bandle down. A couple things runs through his mind, like a volcano eruption (if he's ever heard of those either, a really big explosion works if not, y'know), or a stampede. But the animals are going crazy to. So he hesitates a second, then kind of awkwardly goes to pull Callista down and cover her.
"A rampage of monsters, maybe," he comments after Callista. "But they'd have to be kind of huge-- or a ton of them, y'know?" Orion was a bit worried at first, but when he says that, he gets this kind of smile on his face, and his eyes narrow. He looks over to Rhogar. "Is there something else we should be doing or getting ready to do right now?"

They don't know what an earthquake is? Interesting.... I think with all the stories Rin has heard, the context of the word would make sense, but she would also still think it's something external like the others do; a stampede, or something. But she would follow the caravan's lead, getting down to the ground while still trying to look around. With Callista and Orion already asking, she would just listen instead of adding to the confusion.

“What is a quake?!” Meison says as he’s stumbling for a moment. But like everyone else, he’ll follow suit and get down. With everything shaking around and under them, he’ll hunker down and lean over Rin, bracing his arms on the shaking ground so he’s kind of covering her like a turtle shell, but you know, not squashing her into the ground.

"Just stay down!" Rhogar shouts as the quake reaches its climax before petering off into a rumbling silence. The entire experience lasts for perhaps thirty or forty seconds, and in the silence that follows the quake, the air is instead filled with the sounds of frightened animals. Several of the caravaneers begin shouting to one another, checking on each other's safety before turning their attention toward calming the animals.
Rhogar sits up slowly and looks around. "Everyone okay? Anyone hurt?" He reaches a hand out to Bandle, who looks thoroughly disheveled and dizzy from the brief experience.
"Strange... I've never heard of a quake 'round these here parts. But then, not all quakes are natural..."

Callista lays belly down, flustered by Orion and squeaks out a little 'thank you'.
It seems like our small party got spared the brunt of whatever caused the earthquake. Sshould some of us explore the caravan, check on the other folks or keep an eye out for threats? Thiss feels like a literary term- q'est çe... An 'inciting event.'
"I'm okay. Are you okay? Is everyone fine?" Callista is flummoxed but unharmed, and is already trying to brush the dust off.

In games, it's called a 'flag'. Though yeah, I don't know if natural events can be flags. Anyway, Orion shoots a quick nod to Callista, helping her back up when it's all over.
"That didn't seem like... bad, y'know? Or I mean, things moved a lot, but the ground didn't get ripped up so I guess as long as the animals aren't too frightened, we should be good?" Orion looks around at the others. While he's interested in checking on those animals and maybe some of the younger people, he tilts his head at Rhogar.
"That felt like, y'know, a heck of an animal stampede. What else would cause earthquakes if they aren't natural?"

Aww, that's cute, him covering her. Once the tremors stop, Rin would be pretty quick to get back to her feet, wiggling out from underneath Meison if she needs to.
I think checking on things around them sounds like a plan. They probably have plenty of people to help, but we like sticking our noses into things. *Yuki grins pointedly.*
So Rin dusts herself off. "I am fine. Do we need to do anything? Do 'quakes' usually repeat?"

Meison looks a bit distressed, and he fuses over Rin a little to make sure she’s okay as they get up. Once he’s all satisfied with that, he’ll look around at the others, then finally the caravan people. Rin jumping in to help kicks him in gear too. “Who needs help?” But weirdly, he also puffs up a little bit, like to look more intimidating. *Mei mimics the puffing up for a second* You know, in case it’s actually a stampede or a monster and he needs to go be a shield.

A 'flag' is an appropriate term. I'm familiar with 'inciting incident' as well, as Grenadine mentioned. As to whether this is one, I cannot confirm or deny at this point in the adventure.
At any rate, several of the caravaneers begin shouting back affirmations of their safety - it seems as though the quake did little more than startle everyone.
"Sometimes," Rhogar says to Rin as Bandle dusts herself off. "We should probably do a quick turn around the camp, make sure everything's okay. Could be nothing. Could be..."
The badger trails off and taps his chin with the knuckle of one hand. "Might also be an Emergence..."

...
Callista finishes dusting herself off and looks to see the others ready to get nosey. She'll reach under a wing and into the starry space to take inventory. I imagine she is quick to jump to healing and damage mitigation.
And, naturally, kind of meanders toward the middle of the group - the rest of the party being more physical. I think what Rhogar says pulls her attention away, "Emergence? What do you mean by that?"

Yeah, Orion has his ears perked up, and tilts his head as he echoes Callista. "What's an Emergence?"

I think Rin would sigh at Meison fussing over her, but she would still smile at let him make sure she's ok. She starts to situate her things as she waits for Rhogar to explain.

Once Meison is satisfied all is more or less well with everyone, he'll settle down and wait for an explanation.
